About Us

Who are we?

UBC Concrete Toboggan is an engineering design team from the University of British Columbia Civil Engineering Department! We pride ourselves on being a multidisciplinary team, boasting a wide variety of engineering and non-engineering students!

Being one of UBC’s oldest design teams, we have a very long history! We annually compete at the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race - Canada’s oldest engineering competition!

What do we do?

Our team designs, innovates, and constructs a new toboggan design each year. The annual project is composed of a metal roll cage, manual steering and braking systems with front and rear suspension, and four concrete skis acting as the toboggan’s running surfaces.

Throughout the design and construction process, the team uses a variety of online design software and physical construction machinery. These include SolidWorks and AutoCAD modeling software, waterjet cutting, metalworking and milling, and woodworking crate design.

We provide students with opportunities to practice technical and non-technical skills in a supportive atmosphere. Technical experience includes concrete design, steel design, construction safety, and laboratory techniques.  Non-technical experience includes teamwork, organization, communication, and scheduling. These non-technical skills are especially important for team members that choose to take on a lead role.

The multi-disciplinary team is made up of a variety of sub-teams, who work together to design and construct the final toboggan. For additional information about what we do, click the button below to learn more about our sub-teams!
